Board Approves Fifth Jackson Charter School

Ambition Preparatory Charter School received approval by the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board on September 10, 2018, to open as a K-8 school in the fall of 2019. The school will serve students who reside within the Jackson Public School District. Ambition Prep will become the fifth charter school to locate in Jackson.

The board delayed action on a recommendation from evaluators to reject applications from RePublic Schools for K-8 and high schools in Jackson; board members will reconsider after state ratings are released. Existing Jackson charter schools operated by RePublic have received consistently poor ratings for academic performance. The board also delayed action on the application of MS Delta Academies, which seeks to open a charter middle school in Leflore County.

The board rejected the application of SR1 to open an elementary charter school in Canton. All other applications had been halted earlier in the review process.
